Track team morale, burnout indicators, and work-life balance metrics
Discover how Bhutan's revolutionary Gross National Happiness philosophy can transform the way teams work, collaborate, and achieve success.
In the early 1970s, Bhutan's King Jigme Singye Wangchuck introduced a revolutionary concept: Gross National Happiness (GNH). Rather than measuring progress solely through economic indicators like GDP, Bhutan chose to prioritize the collective happiness and wellbeing of its people as the ultimate goal of development.
GNH is built on four pillars: sustainable and equitable socio-economic development, preservation and promotion of cultural values, conservation of the natural environment, and establishment of good governance. These pillars work together across nine domains—spanning psychological wellbeing, health, education, time use, cultural diversity, good governance, community vitality, ecological diversity, and living standards.
This holistic framework recognizes that true prosperity comes from balancing material wealth with spiritual, emotional, and environmental wellbeing—a principle that has guided Bhutan to become one of the world's happiest nations.
The traditional approach to project management focuses almost exclusively on deliverables, deadlines, and efficiency metrics. While these are important, they overlook a critical factor: the people executing the projects.
Research consistently shows that burned-out, stressed, and unhappy teams are less productive, less creative, and more likely to leave. In contrast, teams with high wellbeing are 31% more productive, 3 times more creative, and experience 59% less turnover.
This is where GNH becomes transformative. By applying Bhutan's holistic happiness framework to project management, we can create systems that:
GNH for project management isn't about sacrificing productivity for happiness—it's about recognizing that happiness and productivity are intrinsically linked. When teams feel valued, balanced, and purposeful, they naturally perform better and deliver exceptional results.
Each of the nine domains can be directly applied to create healthier, more productive project management environments
